Cinegy - enabling media technology
Cinegy focuses on the research and development of media and television software and technologies. Cinegy Workflow is the software platform which combines digital asset management, video ingest and software based encoding, broadcast automation and playout, production tools, archive storage & retrieval - all integrated into one seamless database driven production workflow.
The development of Cinegy Workflow began over 10 years ago, as an integrated digital archive, asset management and production environment, based on desktop PC hardware for the front-end and standard IT server equipment on the back-end, all sitting on the existing network infrastructure. This design forms the basis of today’s workflow. The work resulted in first pilots during 2001 and first commercial products became available in 2002 branded as Cinegy. The goal was to have the archive not as a mere afterthought, but as a process that starts by accumulating metadata right from the start to create a complete lifecycle as a never-ending process that keeps adding value to the media assets throughout their existence. The Cinegy platform from the start was designed as an enterprise level system that is resolution independent, storage systems agnostic, extremely scalable and absolutely open in terms of architecture. Over time, additional elements such as news integration, broadcast automation and playout have been added to the solution as well.
In order to meet the requirements of the broadcast industry, Cinegy developed new, high-end software MPEG codecs, highly scalable media asset management and collaborative software frameworks, advanced real-time media engines, real-time collaborative metadata handling and communication, heterogeneous production integration (AAF, IMX, DV, MXF, XML etc. ) and many more areas.
SQL database driven digital asset management forms the basis, taking collaboration and team workflow way beyond just shared storage. The digital asset management platform abstracts physical storage to virtual storage and in addition provides load balancing, different storage classes, storage migration, HSM integration, garbage collection, and very elaborate user access rights policies.
Cinegy licenses a number of these core technologies to various broadcast and consumer video software and hardware manufacturers that use them in their product offerings, to offer the best-of-breed solutions in the industry. Cinegy directly addresses the needs of the broadcast, television and production markets, to become the premier provider of media technology and production systems.

With so much choice for camera gear these days for every budget, I have put together a list of my ten most essential pieces of kit that have become key to my work and shoots. The most expensive item costs over £6000 and the cheapest just £10. For me, camera gear needs to not just be great but it needs to make everything easier so I can focus on telling the story and capturing the best footage possible. This talk is not a shopping list of what to buy but me explaining why gear like this can help you too.
Here is a bit about Philip...
Philip Bloom is a world-renowned filmmaker who, for the past 16 years of his 33 year career has specialised in creating incredible cinematic images no matter what the camera.
His use of DSLRs to shoot part of Lucasfilms’ last movie “Red Tails” proved a huge point to the naysayers and was key to the boom in the DSLR video revolution. Since then he has always been at the forefront of adopting new technology that is beneficial to filmmakers.
He spent 17 years working for Sky News as a cameraman covering the biggest stories from all over the world. Since going freelance in 2006 he has specialised in documentaries and has worked for all the major UK broadcasters, as well as countless independent production companies and US Networks including CBS, Discovery, FOX, NBC and CNN, for whom he filmed the highly regarded travel documentary series “The Wonder List with Bill Weir”

In this panel session we'll be looking at mojo, mobile Journalism, where we can record and edit stories wherever we are to be broadcast whenever we need to.
On the panel in this session we have Nick Garnett who is a TV, radio and online reporter for BBC national news. He first started using a phone for what's now known as 'mojo' in 2009. He's used it to broadcast live from riots, terrorist attacks, earthquakes and war zones in some of the most challenging environments imaginable. "It's often said it's all about the story," he says. "But it's also about using small, easy to hide, easy to replace kit - wherever you are in the world." He's recorded and edited everything on his phone from news clips to hour-long documentaries and podcasts. He never goes anywhere without a spare battery.
Also on the panel is Cassius Rayner. Cassius started as a trainee camera assistant for regional news TV in the early 90’s. After training he became a freelance camera operator with his first assignment with the United Nations UNOPS division overseas. In 1997 Cassius directed his first drama ‘JUNK’ starring Adam Ant which won the Portobello Film Festival award for ‘Best Independent Film’ - Cassius then directed a short film as part of a series for FILMFOUR.
He continued to camera operate in documentaries, music videos and corporate content for a number of years, and in 2005 was offered his first directing role on a feature documentary in the USA - the documentary was picked up by various TV channels, including ABC Australia and SKY TV. Cassius then dedicated a number of years supporting, mentoring and training disadvantaged and marginalised young people in film production in partnership with ITV and Creative Skillset. In 2014 he turned his attention to the possibilities of mobile video content and began a new journey in filming documentaries, music videos and drama just using mobile phones.
Cassius has not used a main stream camera since 2014 and has now received 14 International Film Awards for films shot using mobiles. He has received laurels from Canada, Sweden, Germany, Ireland, Australia, Japan and the USA. Cassius is now a UK leading expert in mobile filmmaking and is a guest lecturer and speaker with Met Film School, London Film Academy and the BFI.
The combination of Blackmagic RAW, Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 12K and DaVinci Resolve gives you unrivalled quality from acquisition through to post production. In this session we’ll look at how oversampling from 12K gives you the best 8K and 4K images with subtle skin tones and extraordinary detail.
Free to attend on first come basis, no extra workshop registration is needed as long as you have registered to come to the event.

We believe that all generated material has a commercial benefit and can be used as part of your sales toolkit. The aim of all PR/marcoms/social media/videos/podcasts – basically outbound communications be it digital or print – is to enhance brand, reputation and ultimately, revenue.
It’s not enough anymore to generate PRs and hope they’ll be read by the appropriate people. Maximising the reach and potential of every single piece of news is the key to multi-platform success. So, we don't generate PRs or articles. We generate content. Great content to guarantee all brand and messaging opportunities are captured.
With the current state of the market and economy, the business and ROI strategy, consultancy, as well as the risk management offered, needs to be highlighted and a strong message throughout all activities. You need to be seen as a benefactor to your customer/partner, rather than a straight supplier. The media, and therefore, market, need to be looking to you as the authority, choice and leader going forward – making the difference in a very positive and focused way. And always thinking about the business implications.
